Work initially started in 1882 when the GWR laid a short spur at Longdon Road to enable through running from Moreton-in-Marsh as prior to this date all traffic originating from Moreton-in-Marsh had to reverse at Longdon Road as the Shipston-on-Stour branch faced Stratford upon Avon. Work was delayed when it was found that the original 1833 Act forbade the use of steam locomotives. Initially speed was restricted to 20 mph and it was not until 1st July 1889 that the line reopened.
