GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hockley and Duddeston: gwrhd706
The number of cranes in the photograph would seem to
indicate that this platform 'deck' was where the heavier shipments were
unloaded. The crane on the left has two men either side of a spreader beam, a
device used to lift wide loads without causing the type of damage caused by
chains pulling at a sharp diagonal angle. The platform area around the top
appears to contain newsprint on the right which Frank Popplewell records was a
major source of revenue for the GWR.
