View of Hockley's Middle Gate adjacent to the Inwards shed, now Bottom shed, seen in the middle 1960s. The tunnel seen above led under the railway's sidings and main lines to the passenger station. After 1939 the Bottom shed was used as warehousing and would have generated a considerable amount of cartage traffic much of requiring the use of weigh bridges. The two lorries standing on either side of the single storey brick building are standing on steel decks that weighed the vehicle, displaying the information to the railway's member of staff. The lorry was weighed on both its inward and outward journey with the difference being recorded as the weight of the load. The clerk responsible for operating the weigh bridge would need to be aware of various tricks to alter the weight of the lorry ranging from the driver sitting in the cab in one direction only to have drums filled with water, again for one direction only.
