The new Amenities block was located in the north-west corner of the goods yard between Top shed and Pitsfield Street. The building was very "functional" and characterless compared to the architecture adopted by railways in general prior to the First World War. The building initially housed the porters, checkers and loaders mess rooms on the first floor, and the pay office and various stores on the ground floor.
