Looking towards Birmingham from beneath the passenger footbridge with a British Railways DMU stop sign seen adjacent to the platform lock up circa 1960. The 1950s had seen some slight changes to the station. The numerous lamp posts had gone replaced by fewer but brighter electric lights. The introduction of Derby built class 116 DMUs on the line in 1957 resulted in stations having signs erected on the platform advising drivers where to stop. The white sign displaying the number 6 indicates to drivers of six-coach units where to stop at the station. Stations often had two such signs with with either a number 4 or 6 reflecting the different lengths of trains used on a particular route.
