GWR Route: Alcester to Hatton Junction

Claverdon Station: gwrc925

A view towards the old station platform where a new GW type 12a Signal Box was constructed

At the end of the old station platform a new GW type 12a Signal Box was constructed to control the new signalling and the goods loop points which previously had been controlled by two ground frames. At this time the Great Western were starting to experiment with new materials such as concrete lintels over the locking room windows and asbestos roofing (although this box had a gabled grey slate roof).

They had also moved away from the ‘3 up 2 down’ operating floor window panes which had characterised Great Western Signal boxes for over half a century and had incorporated an internal staircase. Roof finals had also been dispensed with. Tubular steel signal posts were now the standard design. The X on the signal arm indicates that the signal is not in use. 17th March 1939.
