GWR Route: Alcester to Hatton Junction

Claverdon Station: gwrc921

Ex-GWR 2-6-2T No 4118 passes the old Claverdon station with a Leamington to Stratford local passenger train

The old Claverdon station can be seen from the road bridge as a Great Western 5101 Class 2-6-2T No 4118 passes with a Leamington to Stratford local passenger train on 22nd April 1957. A comparison with photograph gwrc925 reveals the absence of the 1939 signal box and signals and also that the trailing crossover to the goods loop has been removed. This rationalisation occurred in 1953, leaving the goods loop as a siding controlled by a ground frame. The old station buildings and 1891 signal box remain in use as a store, with one doorway bricked up and the chimneys removed. The 5101 class was very similar to the earlier 51XX class, but with enlarged bunkers, curved drop ends and a lower cab roof. Like their predecessors, this class was also allocated mainly to the Wolverhampton Division for suburban traffic duties. No 4118 was built at Swindon in November 1936, withdrawn from Leamington Shed (84D) in September 1962 and scrapped at J Cashmore Great Bridge in November 1963.
