A view of the road-level buildings seen from the platform entrance of the old station on 24th April 1939. The station access steps lead up to the road and the new station booking and parcel office buildings. Notice the short cast iron lamp column and the station name engraved on the oil lamp glass. There were three other standard Great Western cast iron column heights; 6 foot 1½ inches, 8 foot 1½ inches and 13 foot 6 inches measured from ground level to the base of the lamp fitting. In the old station entrance yard is a standard corrugated iron hut. These huts were six foot wide by eight foot long and were designed to provide a safe store for the lamp fuel and other associated materials. They were therefore referred to as lamp huts.
