GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Birmingham Snow Hill Station: gwrbsh80a
Close up of image 'gwrbsh80' showing the range of passenger
facilities located on Snow Hill station's Platform 5 and 6 together with a
variety of platform furniture. The Great Western, as with all railway companies
provided additional facilities at their stations, which included not only
seating but also public telephones, chocolate dispensing machines and even
arcade type amusement machines. On the left under the refreshment room sign is
a booth where children could 'win' a toy. At every large station was a 'print
your name' machine which cost one penny and allowed up to ten or twelve
characters to be printed on a strip of aluminum. Snow Hill retained its machine
until closure in 1967 and still costing one penny. It was common practice for
apprentices to be sent to the station to print their name so that it could
riveted to their tool box.
