Looking from the steps leading down Platform 11, which was later renumbered 12, towards the buildings housing the passenger facilities

Looking from the steps leading down Platform 11, which was later renumbered 12, towards the buildings housing the passenger facilities circa 1911. The signs on the building fronting Platform 11 read: General Waiting Room; First Class Waiting Room; Gentlemen's Lavatory; Refreshments; No 9 Platform with the last sign being indistinguishable. The train standing at Platform 11 is headed by an unidentified GWR Dean outside-framed 2-4-0 and is ready to depart for the South. The line leading off to the right was a short spur where locomotives could stand in between duties and from the lack of ballast and the adjacent sleepers it would appear only just to have become operational. Both Platform 6, on the other side of the four tracks, and Platform 7 have fencing with with angled access/exits at intervals along the platforms. The advertising fixed to the fencing on both platforms would indicate that the fencing had been erected for some time. Its not known for certain as to its purpose but it is thought in all probability this was a form of crowd control during the rebuilding of the station when passengers alighted en masse.
