If the signal box had been equipped for manual operation, its most likely that not only would it be much bigger but its very unlikely to have been built with just one central row of support columns. The reason why is because the mechanical system would have required a large space underneath the signal box where the movements of the levers were translated in to movement of rodding or wire.
