The inspection coach is, it is believed, travelling along the line south of Stratford Upon Avon crossing one of the bridges that carried the line over the River Avon and River Stour. The line is still being upgraded by the GWR from single line to main line standards as is evident by the incomplete bridge abutment immediately in front of the inspection coach.

The inspection coach would carry GWR officers and supervisors at various times along the line to inspect the progress of the works and, as part of this process, would be checking the gauging of the various structures including over bridges, tunnels and line side equipment. To assist in this, as can be seen, the inspection coach has been fitted with 'arms' to both ends of the coach. C1908
