A partially elevated view of Hockley's long boundary with Pitsford Street as seen on 11th July 1938. The photographer is standing on the corner of All Saints Street and Pitsford Street and has managed to capture the length of the yard (as the top of the road in the distance marks the southern most point) as well as illustrating how Pitsford Street dipped in the middle. This ground undulation required the GWR to import substantial amounts of spoil to raise the centre of the yard to the same level as the two ends. It did however make the installation of the underpass to the station a simple process. For a view of the underpass see image 'gwrhd690'. The preparation work for the building of the new Top shed can be seen in the foreground whilst the old North Gate can be seen just past the lone figure on the right. The offices on the left were located on the corner of the old Outwards and Tranship' shed and was the old Night Office which had a lockup underneath at yard level, all of which would be demolished as part of the redevelopment of the yard.
