Sancta Lane

GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line

Sancta Lane was the site of the OWWR´s (Oxford, Worcester & Wolverhampton Railway) branch terminus and was only operational for a very brief period of time, from 12 July 1859 to 24 July 1861 when the OWWR was joined with the Stratford Upon Avon Railway's branch line to Hatton.

According to Vic Mitchell and Keith Smith in their excellent book 'Stratford upon Avon to Cheltenham' the site of Sancta Lane station is where the 'Sanctus Road 'bridge is today. Constructed in 1864 the bridge now spans the new road that occupies the GWR track between Evesham Road and the Shipston Road.

Sancta Lane has become Sanctus Street on one side of the bridge and Sanctus Road on the other. The bridge still has a railway heritage as it is a hump back bridge which is too narrow to carry traffic simultaneously in both directions requiring traffic lights to control the traffic in both directions. At the time of writing, December 2005, Mike lives just a few hundred yards from the bridge.

Due to the short life of the station and the date of operation there are no photographs or images available.
