View of ex-LNER 2-6-2 Class V2 No 60828 being lifted by two railway cranes back on to the track. Emergency calls to the Rugby Police and the County Ambulance Service were made from Rugby station within two minutes of the accident and they were answered promptly. Ambulances, the Civil and Railway Police and the Fire Brigade arrived at 3:35 pm. The ambulances were unable to get within 200 yards of the site and the seriously injured were taken to them on stretchers. They left for hospital by 4:10 pm and the remaining casualties were removed by 5:00 pm. Assistance was also rendered by personnel of the adjacent army depot and by two members of the Royal Army Medical Corps who were travelling in the train. Both the lines were blocked. A breakdown crane and vans were ordered and arrived without delay. The lines were cleared of obstruction by 4:50 am and were re-opened for normal services at restricted speed by 10:00 am on the following day. The locomotive was repaired and resumed in revenue service for another ten years. The full report and diagrams of this and other accidents are available via The Railways Archive website.
