GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Warwick Station: gwrw387a
Close up of image 'gwrw387' showing workmen in the process
of unloading coal prior to stacking the coal on the ground circa 1938. In most
areas of the country coal was delivered in 10 ton open wagons of the type seen
above. The workmen would use the larger pieces of coal to form a box with the
large pieces acting as a retaining wall so that smaller pieces could be stacked
inside. Double handling and even triple handling of the coal was very common up
until the Second World War but as labour costs began to rise more economical
means of handling coal was sought.
