GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Warwick Station: gwrw372a
Close up of image 'gwrw372' showing the refuge siding
located on the Hatton side of Warwick station's up platform. The siding is
controlled by a lower quadrant signal and has a water column strategically
located so that waiting locomotives can top up their water. It was said that
there were times during the Second World War that traffic could be so
gridlocked that trains could stand for up to 24 hours in one refuge siding. The
refuge siding was fitted with a short spur at the head in case of runaways.
