The multiple independent smoke troughs over each road radiating from the two boarded turntables

Tyseley Locomotive Shed prior to opening in 1908. The multiple independent smoke troughs over each road radiating from the two boarded turntables, indicates the priority given to smoke extraction. Not only could smoke reduce the lighting levels and create an unpleasant environment for staff, it could also damage the timber and steel that supported the roof. Large areas of glazed roofing supplemented by suspended gas lanterns provided the lighting. Blackout regulations required this roof glazing to be painted over during the Second World War and post war shed photographs often appear to show locomotive sheds as dingy places because of this. Also seen here were the numerous water standpipes (see 'gwrt2993'). An eight inch water main circled around each turntable supplying a total of 48 hydrants and 41 standpipes in the Locomotive Shed from the main water tank above the coaling stage. For more details of the water supply arrangements at the Tyseley Locomotive Shed see 'gwrt3913'.
