Tyseley station was built to accommodate passenger traffic arising from the opening of the main line route to the South West and Wales. When British Railways diverted traffic away from the former GWR route to the former Midland Railway route via Lickey, Tyseley station's importance was down graded to that of any other intermediate station on the line. The close proximity of the station to the centre of Birmingham and the more regular and flexible bus routes that were available meant that the extensive platform based passenger facilities were no longer used to full effect.
