GWR 4-6-0 Star Class No 4017 'Knight of Liege' rests at Stratford on Avon with a Torquay to Birmingham express on 13th July 1935. This 40xx class locomotive was built at Swindon works to Lot 173 in April 1908 and carried the name 'Knight of the Black Eagle' which was removed at the outbreak of the First World War in August 1914. The name 'Knight of Liege', was allocated instead as it was a city in Belgium which had been occupied by the Germans. The Star class locomotive carried the name until it was withdrawn in Nov 1949 from PDN Paddington shed to be scrapped at Swindon works circa 1950.
