Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Grange class No 6861 'Crynant Grange pilots ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle Class No 7001 'Sir James Milne on 7th September 1962

Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Grange class No 6861 'Crynant Grange pilots ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle Class No 7001 'Sir James Milne on the last northbound 'Cornishman' on 7th September 1962. The 68xx class locomotive No 6861 was built by Swindon works in February 1939 and allocated to St. Philip's Marsh shed in Bristol. Having been allocated to 2A Tyseley shed in March 1959 and again in May 1965, it was withdrawn from Tyseley in October 1965 to be scrapped by G Cohen of Kettering. The 4073 Castle class locomotive was built by Swindon works to Lot 367 in May 1946 as 'Denbigh Castle' which it lost in February 1948 when it was allocated the name 'Sir James Milne' in honour of the retiring General Manager of the Great Western Railway (1929 to 1947) and who had also been Deputy Chairman of the Railway Executive Committee from 1938 to 1947. In August 1950 and again in March 1959 it was allocated to Old Oak Common shed. A double chimney and a 4 row superheater was fitted in September 1960 in which form it was withdrawn from 2B Oxley shed in Wolverhampton in September 1963.
