Unidentified 49xx (Hall) class locomotive on a Wolverhampton to West Country express leaves Stratford-on-Avon

Unidentified 49xx (Hall) class locomotive on a Wolverhampton to West Country express leaves Stratford-on-Avon. The hut with the hipped roof in front of the locomotive was a conversion of the brick ground floor lock room of the original Stratford East Signal Box, which was closed in August 1933 at the same time as Stratford Goods Junction Signal Box. The operational facilities of both these Signal Boxes were replaced by a new Stratford East Signal Box, which was built utilising a spare Signal Box building from Acton West (see gwrsa1338, gwrsa1497 and gwrsa1498).

The coach (W599xW) is a fifty seven foot long, corridor brake third coach to Diagram D118 which had been built at Swindon in August 1935 under lot 1528. This was designed as general service stock for main line use and had four third class compartments, a central guard’s compartment and a large (22 feet long) luggage compartment (with two double doors on both sides). There were thirty-three diagram D118 coaches built as detailed in the table below. These coaches were condemned by December 1963.
