Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Hall class No 4973 'Sweeney Hall' is seen passing Stratford on Avon West Signal Box on a Birmingham to Cardiff and Swansea service on 16 August 1958. The standard GWR water tank supplied the water to the water cranes and columns in both the yard and the station and was fed by gravity from the Stratford canal at Wilmecote via a pipe built when the 1908 North Warwickshire line was opened. A member of the 49xx class, No 4973 was built by Swindon works to Lot 254 in January 1930 and remained in service until July 1962 when it was withdrawn from 88A Canton shed in Cardiff to be scrapped in November 1962 by R Hayes of Bridgend.
