An unidentified ex-GWR 4-6-0 Grange class locomotive is assisted by ex-GWR 0-6-0 No 2257 to help climb the long gradient to Earlswood

An unidentified ex-GWR 4-6-0 Grange class locomotive is assisted by ex-GWR 0-6-0 No 2257 to help climb the long gradient to Earlswood on a Birmingham service in 1957. Unlike the LMS the Great Western insisted that when a passenger train required assistance, the train engine should lead and maintain responsibility for the train's journey. Therefore the 2251 class locomotive had been coupled behind the Grange class locomotive for the duration of the journey to Earlswood. Built at Swindon works in April 1930 No 2257 remained in service until September 1964 when it was withdrawn from 81D Reading shed to be scrapped in December 1964 by J Cashmore of Great Bridge.
