GWR Route: Stratford on Avon to Hatton

Ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle class No 5070 'Sir Daniel Gooch' is seen waiting to depart with the main portion of the up Cornishman on 23rd May 1959. Michael Mensing recorded that ex-GWR 0-6-0 No 2257 banked the train out of Stratford on Avon. The water crane on the right was operated by the turning the handle whilst the 'bag' or hose was secured by a chain to the steel funnel to prevent the crane's arm from slewing across the tracks. Built at Swindon works to Lot 310 in June 1938 No 5070 remained in service until March 1964 when it was withdrawn from 81A Old Oak Common shed to be scrapped during August 1964 by Birds of Risca.
