Goods were often shipped from their origin and stored in a warehouse or goods shed before being loaded only for the operation to be reversed at the destination. Prior to the arrival of motorised transport when labour was cheap this was not an issue but after the First World War, and in particular the Second World War, rising labour costs combined with the ease of directly transporting goods by road meant that railways lost much of their goods traffic.
