Rebuilt ex-SR West Country 4-6-2 No 34040 'Crewkerne' on a football special near Lapworth on 27th April 1963. This was for the FA Cup semi final between Manchester United versus Southampton played at Villa Park which Manchester United won 1-0. There were a number of former Southern West Country class locomotives in action that day. They included No 34028, 34040, 34042, 34045, 34050, 34052, 34088, 34094 and 34098 which were routed via Oxford and Leamington Spa whilst No 34009, 34039 and 34046 were routed via Oxford , Worcester and Kidderminster. Another special was worked by No 7919. Also involved in these special workings was No 34067 which over the S&D as far as Bath and No 34041 which worked via Salisbury to Bristol. On the same day No 34017 worked a special from Christchurch to Swindon and No 34102 worked a schoolboy International special from Poole to Watford. All trains ran within a few minutes of Schedule and there were no reports of bad behaviour or vandalism. Built at Southern Railway No 21C140 at Brighton works in September 1946, No 34040 was subsequently rebuilt by British Railways and remained in service until July 1967 when it was withdrawn from 70F Bournemouth shed.
