Looking north from Station Road bridge showing Hatton Middle Signal Box located in the vee of the junction in 1929. The branch to Stratford curving away on the left was opened in October 1860 and had originally been built with mixed gauge track (4'-8½" - Standard Gauge and 7'-0¼" - Broad Gauge). The signalling and track layout seen in the above photograph allowed for bidirectional running and to access all the lines running through Hatton station. Initially Hatton had just two signal boxes, one at the south end of the station and another at the north end of the station. When the North Junction was created in 1897, to allow trains from Stratford on Avon to proceed directly to Snow Hill without the need to reverse at Hatton, the signal box at the northern end of Hatton was moved some thirty yards across the junction and named Hatton Middle Signal Box. A new signal box was erected at the new North Junction and was named after the junction it controlled.
