GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
Hockley Station: gwrhd711
Looking south along the deck of Platforms 2 and 1 under Top
shed's glazed roof on 11th August 1943. The importance of glazing a roof is
well demonstrated by this photograph. The natural daylight is sufficient to
light the whole shed which clearly saves money and would increase productivity.
This view shows very little activity suggesting to Frank Popplewell that the
photograph was taken between shifts . Platform or deck 1 on the right was
rarely used to accommodate railway vehicles and in this view is being used as a
cartage deck as is evident by the rows of parked horse-drawn vehicles with
their shafts raised in the air.
