Ex-GWR 72xx Class 2-8-2T No 7246 receives assistance from a 2-6-2T banker as it climbs the down goods line

Ex-GWR 72xx Class 2-8-2T No 7246 receives assistance from a 2-6-2T banker as it climbs the down goods line. Rebuilt from a 46xx Class locomotive by Swindon works to Lot 318 in July 1938, No 7246 remained in service until September 1963 when it was withdrawn from 86G Pontypool Road shed to be scrapped by R Hayes of Bridgend. The 72xx Class locomotive had originally been built as a 2-8-0T locomotive by Churchward but was then rebuilt by Collett so that its coal capacity could be increased from four to six tons. This was achieved by extending the frames at the rear and adding a rear pony truck.
