GWR Route: Hatton to Bearley and Alcester Branch

Great Alne Station: gwrga802

A 1949 view of Great Alne station seen from the Alcester side of the level crossing

A 1949 view of Great Alne station seen from the abandoned trackwork on the Alcester side of the level crossing. Notice the scotch block fixed across the track to denote the operating limit of the branch. At this time the line beyond Great Alne to Alcester had been disused for ten years. On the Bearley to Great Alne section of the line, the special wartime passenger services had ceased on 3rd July 1944 (replaced by buses from Coventry) and the twice weekly freight service stopped in 1947. The branch line remained open to Great Alne for the carriage of sugar beet by special arrangement until 1st March 1951, after which the section to Aston Cantlow became an extended siding for wagon storage.
