GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Earlswood Lakes Station: gwrel458
Looking towards Birmingham from under the passenger
footbridge and along the down platform with Rumbush Lane road bridge marking
the station's boundary. There was a refuge siding located on the down side just
beyond the road bridge. Refuge sidings were needed at intervals along most main
line routes to provide a means for moving slow moving goods traffic out of the
paths of passenger services. The station was lit by oil either by lamps hung
from the canopy or on lampposts placed at approximately 30 feet apart along the
platforms. A standard GWR water crane can be seen located at the far end of the
up platform. Water cranes were designed to rotate through 90° from its
parked position so that the 'bag', the flexible hose made of leather, could be
positioned over the locomotive, whereas a water column was a fixed vertical
pipe with a 'bag' that had to be extended across the platform and into the
water tank on the locomotive.
