GWR Route: Alcester to Hatton Junction

Claverdon Station: gwrc874

Another turn of the century view of Claverdon station under Great Western ownership with the Station master standing under one of the station oil lamps circa 1900. The platform signal box is in use, but there is no nameplate fitted. Despite the box being built in September 1891 the cast iron nameplate was not ordered until 18th July 1899. The 3x3 small pane windows is typical in GW Signal Boxes of the period and the pitch of the gabled roof, large final, but no roof vents, point to this being a variation of the standard GW Type 4 Signal Box. Following the horrific accident at Armagh in Ireland, the Board of Trade introduced ‘The Regulation of Railways Act 1889’ which required automatic brakes, absolute block and the interlocking of points and signals on passenger lines. By 1891 following an intensive Signal Box construction programme 97% of all locations in England and Wales were interlocked.
