GWR 4-4-0 City class No 3717 'City of Truro' is seen
standing in Snow Hill station's Platform 3 bay waiting to pilot an express
train forward to the north on 30th August 1930. Built at Swindon works as No
3440 in May 1903 No 3717 is said to be the first steam locomotive to exceed
100mph although this claim is not universally acepted. Because of its historic
relevance to the GWR No 3717 was preserved when it was withdrawn seven months
later in March 1931 from Swindon works and is now part of the national
collection at the National
Railway Museum in York.
