GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Birmingham Snow Hill Station: gwrbsh1688
The three girders that formed the special stage in the
process of being moved between the two main platforms at Snow Hill. The nearest
supporting trestle is situated on top of packing on the central two lines and
the stage has travelled across the Main Up line. The Down line had remained
open for traffic during the movement of the stage over the Up line because,
despite this possession taking place on a Sunday there was still significant
traffic passing through Birmingham. Once the Main Up line was clear and
returned to operation, possession of the Down line was taken and the stage was
moved across this line to another trestle on the Down main platform. These
trestles were the same ones used previously to support the long structural
girders during the erection of the Parcels Areas roof. The girders that
formed the special stage were designed by the steel-work contractors Messrs.
Keays, who had used them previously during work at Greenwich.
