A view of Snow Hill station looking south towards Snow Hill Tunnel with most of the roof erected

A view of Snow Hill station looking south towards Snow Hill Tunnel. Most of the roof has been erected, but the special stage can be seen in the distance spanning the four tracks close to the tunnel entrance. Positioned on the central up line is the packing support constructed in preparation for the final removal of the special stage girders. Erecting the roof using this method allowed traffic to continue unimpeded during the station reconstruction. The twenty two foot wide central opening above the tracks allowed locomotive smoke to escape from the station, which reduced the frequency necessary to clean the underside of the roof glazing. The handrail around the central opening in the roof also functioned as a water pipe, used when cleaning the upper surfaces of the roof glazing.
