Sketch showing a section through one of the transverse bay trusses above the special stage supported by three wheeled trestles on a temporary rail track on the platform. The fifty foot wide special stage served the dual purpose of providing; protection for passengers and traffic below during the construction, and an elevated erection area for the roofing contractors. It was structurally designed to support the roofing steelwork (associated with the main girders and transverse bays) and the forces from a 7 ton travelling crane which was provided to lift components on to the special stage.
