GWR Route: Banbury to Wolverhampton
GWR Route: North Warwickshire Line
Birmingham Snow Hill Station: gwrbsh1663
Virtually all the parcel traffic carried to Birmingham on
the Great Western Railway passed through the parcel's yard under Snow Hill
Station before being transhipped for final distributed on the company's fleet
of road vehicles. On the left behind the trunks and cases is one of the early
mechanical cartage vehicles, which appears to be a Sidney Straker & Squire
Ltd 15 cwt Van. The Great Western Railway purchased several of their chassis in
1909, with a 2 cylinder 14 h.p. vertical engine, and Swindon works manufactured
the bodywork. This photograph shows the completed girder work above the parcels
yard, which supported the track and platforms of Snow Hill Station. On the
right the girders carried the up relief goods and sidings trackwork, while on
the left the higher girders supported platforms 10 and 12.
