Ex-LMS 4-6-2 Princess Coronation class No 46237 'City of
Bristol' is seen standing at Platform 7 on the 2 35pm Wolverhampton to
Paddington service during April 1955. The ex-LMS Pacific locomotive had been
loaned to the Western Region for trials but other than confirming the class
could operate on the same routes as the King class no long lasting decision was
made. However the following year saw the King class suffer the indignity of
being temporarily withdrawn en-masse due faults with their axles which saw a
variety of locomotives being drafted in from the other regions including
Stanier's Pacifics. Originally built in streamlined form at Crewe works in
August 1939 No 6237 was to remain in service until September 1964 when it was
withdrawn from Upperby shed in Carlisle to be scrapped during January 1965 by
Arnott & Young West of Scotland Shipbreaking Company of Troon.
