Ex-GWR 4-4-0 Dukedog class No 9001 is seen passing through Snow Hill on an engineering train of hopper wagons on 13th September 1953. Built as GWR No 3201 'St Michael' at Swindon works in April 1936 No 9001 was only to remain in service for another few months being withdrawn in April 1954 from Oswestry shed to be scrapped circa 1954 at Swindon works. The 'Dukedog' or 'Earl' class were in fact rebuilds using 'Bulldog class' frames married with 'Duke class' boilers and in the instance of No 9001 it received the frames of 'Duke class' No 3412 'John G Griffiths' and the boiler of 'Bulldog class' No 3201 'St Michael'. Within one month of being built No 9001, nee No 3201, had its St Michael' name changed to 'Earl of Dunraven' but within a year this name too was removed, in June 1937.
