Ex-GWR 4-4-0 City class No 3440 'City of Truro' is seen at
the head of an up enthusiasts special as it passes Snow Hill's North Signal
Box. Built at Swindon works in May 1903 No 3440 was to achieve national fame as
being the first locomotive to had exceeded 100 mph. This is frequently
challenged by non-GWR enthusiasts on the basis that the record was not verified
by the physical recording of speed but by the monitoring of the speed by
recording the time on a stop watch between ¼ mile posts on the side of
the track. Its fame was such that upon being retired in March 1931 from Swindon
Works shed it was preserved by the GWR to ultimately be acquired by the
National Railway Museum in York.
