A pair of ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle class locomotives, No 5040 'Stokesay Castle and No 5049 'Earl of Plymouth' are seen standing under the footbridge

A pair of ex-GWR 4-6-0 Castle class locomotives, No 5040 'Stokesay Castle and No 5049 'Earl of Plymouth' are seen standing under the footbridge with an up express service to Paddington on 19th October 1961. Built at Swindon works in June 1935 No 5040's first shed was Old Oak Common where it was also allocated in August 1950 and March 1959. It remained in service until October 1963 when it was withdrawn from Saint Philip's Marsh shed in Bristol to be scrapped at Cooper Metals, Sharpness. Classmate No 5049 was built at Swindon as 'Denbigh Castle' in April 1936 but was renamed in August 1937 and was first allocated to Worcester shed. Prior to be having a double chimney and 4 row superheater fitted September 1959 No 5049 had also been allocated in August 1950 to Canton shed in Cardiff and in March 1959 to Newton Abbot shed. It remained in service until March 1963 when it was withdrawn from Saint Philip's Marsh shed in Bristol.
