A Shunters truck specially constructed to enable Shunters to safely travel on them within marshalling yards. They had a full length runningboard and hand rail on each side to allow men o ride on them. A guard plate was fitted infront of each wheel was a safety feature and a large tool box was provided to store spare equipment. They were usually permanently allocated to a specific location and this was painted on the side of the tool box. Large yards would have one for each shunting locomotive. No 94981 was fairly typical, being one of six built at Swindon to diagram M4 in lot L820 (circa 1918). It had a relatively short, seven foot wheelbase, self contained buffers with 1 foot 4 inch diameter heads and a DCIII brake arrangement which applied a brake shoe to each of the wheels.

The following seven Shunters’ Trucks were known to have been allocated to Bordesley Junction in 1944:

Serial No. Lot No. Diagram No.
41894 L110 M1
41895
41820 L256
41757 L606 M2
94992 L785 M4
94967 L854
41166 L1455 M5

In addition Shunters’ Truck No 41051 (Lot L1085/Dia M4) was also recorded as being branded ‘Bordesley Junction’.
