A six ton steam crane removes the old brickwork from the subsidiary arches during the partial reconstruction of Bordesley Viaduct in 1939. The new reinforced pre-cast concrete slabs can be seen ready to be lifted on to the exposed supporting piers after they had been levelled. These slabs had been specially manufactured at the Great Western Railway's Concrete Works at Taunton and each was individually numbered because the dimensions varied. In the foreground the loops cast into the slabs to facilitate handling can be seen.
