Long Marston Central Engineer Park (Depot)
Long Marston: misclm2433
War Department 0-6-ST No 160 is seen within Long Marston
Ordnance Depot at the head of a two coach train. Roger Monk writes, 'This is
an interesting photo as it shows two coaches of the sixteen built for the
London Tilbury & Southend Railway (LT&S) in 1912 for the joint (with
the Metropolitan District Railway) Southend - Ealing through service by the
Birmingham Carriage & Wagon Company. They had sliding doors, were gangwayed
and had lavatories. They were hauled on the District Railway portion of the
journey by electric locos and steam hauled over the LT&S. The service was
withdrawn on the outbreak of WWII. According to a footnote in HD Welch's
history of the LT&S (Oakwood) twelve of these vehicles were still in
existence in 1944 of which five were used by the WD on the Shropshire &
Montgomeryshire Railway.'
