This second view of the derailed ex-LMS 4-6-2 'Duchess
class' locomotive shows clearly that the derailment was within the confines of
the station. The accident was caused by poor trackwork, in part a consequence
of the lack of maintenance because of the Second World War, and the austerity
conditions that prevailed at the time. C1950
