Ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 48002 is seen assisting with major Permanent Way relaying work south of Rugby on Sunday 19th May 1963. Built by Crewe works in July 1935, No 48002 was to remain in service until September 1966 when it was withdrawn from 10D Lockstock Hall to be scrapped by J Cashmore's of Great Bridge. Allocated at the time of this photograph to Woodford Halse, No 48002 was one the early Stanier 'Consols'* carrying a domeless boiler – the dome-like protuberance here is actually just the top feed cover. This photograph is taken from Barby Camp (originally constructed by the Ministry of Supply. Marshalling within the camp had been performed by an Austerity 0-6-0ST which remained in service there until around 1960). The railway complex within the camp boundary has already been lifted by this date. The ground-frame formerly controlling access to the branch is seen still in place just behind the tender of the locomotive next to the Fogman's hut. (for interest, the entire complement of locos in attendance at this major operation on the day were: Ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0s, No 48386 and No 48002 both allocated to Woodford Halse, ex-LMS 8F 2-8-0 No 48365 allocated to the Midland Region Rugby shed, and WD 8F 2-8-0 No 90365 allocated to Woodford Halse shed.

* The term 'Consul' as used by Tony is short for 'Consolidation' a name used extensively in the United States and elsewhere for the 2-8-0 configuration. Tony writes, 'This is from my own experience, and for all I know it was a regional affectation (like 'Keck' for Cow Parsley, 'mardy' for ill-natured, etc. around Rugby - I'm sure someone has made a life's work out of recording regional language idiosyncrasies like these, I certainly hope so)'.
