British Railways built L1 2-6-4T No 67767 has been rammed by Austerity 2-8-0 No 90697 when leaving the refuge siding

British Railways built L1 2-6-4T No 67767 has been rammed by Austerity 2-8-0 No 90697 when leaving the refuge siding on Wednesday 28th March 1962. At the time of the accident, No 67767 was working a local service. Tony West writes. 'I knew the fireman, Maurice Marston, on the Austerity. I believe his driver was Jimmy Blackwell. He told me that the accident was caused by a faulty track circuit which misled the signalman into giving the right away for the Austerity despite the L1 fouling the trailing connection'. Built by Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn Ltd in September 1949, No 67767 was to remain in service until December 1962 when it was withdrawn from 40E Colwick shed to be scrapped.
