Building the last Main Line Railway
Newton to the Oxford Canal: gcrcs224
View along a section of temporary trackwork towards a
completed brick arch overbridge south of Newton. The wagon standing beneath the
bridge is fitted with dumb buffers, e.g. solid timber baulks that do not
compress to absorb shocks, which indicates that this is most probably a
contractor's vehicle. The bridge's wooden centrings used to support the archway
during construction are seen lying on the banks of the cutting, one on the left
bank before the bridge and another on the right bank after the bridge. The
amount of clutter track on the left must have been used as a siding for the
delivery of the materials for the bridge. The temporary track on the right
shows it has been laid to a much higher standard than was often the case only
the absence of chairs supporting the rails on each sleeper and the distance
between sleepers provide hard evidence that its not part of the
permanent way.
