Ex-LMS 6P 4-6-0 'Rebuilt Royal Scot' No 46142 'The York and Lancaster Regiment' about to depart with the nightly Water Orton to Crewe Class E express goods. This working to Crewe travelled up the West Junction at Water Orton to Bescot via Sutton Park and then onto the West Coast to Crewe. British Railways categorised a Class E working as an 'Express freight, livestock, perishable or ballast train partly fitted, with not less than four braked vehicles next to the engine and connected by the automatic brake pipe. Express freight, livestock, perishable or ballast train with a limited load of vehicles, NOT fitted with the automatic brake'. Built in parallel boiler form in November 1927 by the North British Locomotive Company of Glasgow, No 46142 was rebuilt with a tapered boiler in March 1951 which it retained until January 1964 when it was withdrawn from 9A Longsight shed to be scrapped. The photograph was taken by Vic Smith during one of his shifts at Water Orton Sidings Signal Box.
